One of the most common causes of heel pain is PLANTAR FASCIITIS an inflammation of the thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot.
This band of tissue, known as the plantar fascia, runs from the heel to the toes. Plantar fasciitis tends to be noticeable within the first few stepsafter waking up and may eventually decrease. However, in some cases, plantar fasciitis may return upon standing.
Causes
Standing or walking for long periods of time can contribute to the likelihood of developing plantar fasciitis. Occupations that require standing or walking for long periods of time, such as factory workers, teachers, athletes, etc. are particularly susceptible to plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis occurs when there is too much tension or stress on the plantar fascia. This can cause the plantar fascia to stretch or tear, and over periods of time, can irritate or inflame the plantar fascia.
Potential Problems
Plantar fasciitis can be very painful, and neglecting to treat it may result in chronic heel pain. Furthermore, any alteration to walking habits as an attempt to relieve plantar fasciitis may later cause foot, knee, hip, or back problems.
Treatment
